  1. I have decided to write my memo on how a CCNY needs to create a printing software that can be accessed from students’ devices and print from there. This way students do not have to wait in line to print or go to their classes late, just because they had to print their document. This is an issue that can be fixed really quickly through programming and software development.

    1. Abir, I agree with you; its always a nuisance when I try to print something in the library and the printer doesn’t work, or the document contains too many pages to print in one shot. An effective printing software would definitely increase the efficiency of printing, and would lower the amount of students queuing in line.

    2. Abir, I think this is a great topic to focus on for your memo. It’s always aggravating to have so many printers that do not function properly, especially when you’re on a time constraint. I also do not like how you are not able to air print from your own device, which would also be able to cut down the line. Resolving this issue would be beneficial for the both the students and faculty on campus.

    3. I agree because every time I go to print out a paper I have to wait on line and hope that no one takes my paper on accident. Your idea make printing out paper in the library more accesible. It would also be a lot quicker then it is now.

    4. I agree with this idea a lot, since when you go to the library, there are already a large amount of students on the computers. Which makes students wait longer to print assignments. It will speed up the process and help those who need to print something last minute.

    5. This is a really thoughtful idea. Last semester I tried helping someone to print through their phone but I ultimately gave up. I guess the Release Stations keep the flow of people printing steady, but this makes it seemingly impossible to print anywhere else. I would like to read a memo about it.

  2. My memo will be about the NAC elevators needing an overhaul because not only are they slow and unresponsive but are unsafe as well. There was an instance where the elevator couldn’t go up and was stuck on the first floor shaking up and down with the doors closing and opening partially. Most people can take the stairs and escalators with no issue but the elevators are a must use for handicapped and less able individuals. So it is only right to give those individuals the knowledge of safety that they have the right to.

    1. I agree as the elevators are very unreliable and most of the time I end up either being late to class or having to take the stairs or escalators. The elevators take so long that it really defeats the purpose of having them sometimes.

  3. My memo is about the lack of automatic doorways in the entrances and exits of the NAC building. It is important for the Offices of Facilities Management to include automatic doorways to the already existing traditional doorways, to assist those who are handicapped or disabled. It could also increase the rate of students entering and exiting the building. There are already automatic doorways in some facilities of the CCNY campus, but since the NAC is the largest building on campus, it important to add some there.

    1. I think this is a great idea. Its important that such a busy building like the NAC be easily accessible by everyone. Automatic doorways can definitely help that. Great contribution!

  4. My memo focuses on the power outlets around the City College campus. Personally, I find that there are not enough power outlets in the most convenient places, or they just fail to work. This semester, I have been on campus for longer periods of time and because of this situation I have to keep my devices charged. I constantly have to wander around campus to find a working outlet if it isn’t taken already. Just a week ago, I had to try 4 power outlets in the library before I could find one that would charge my
laptop that I needed for my next class. I know that I am not the only one experiencing this issue and I think it should be taken more seriously.

    1. Gabriella, I ageee with you entirely. In the NAC library there is an entire area in which outlets do not work. Outlets need to be more accessible and also in more comfortable areas with proper seating.

    2. I agree because most power outlets are very inconvenient to get to and when you get to it you van’t even use your device while charging. Some are on the floor and the wire is not long enough to reach and it makes it harder to charge.

  5. My memo topic is the seating in the NAC, specifically the desks in classrooms. I’m pretty sure they all have either small desk spaces or uncomfortable ones. It’s always weird for me to try and wiggle into some of the seats – and I’ve seen these kinds of seats/desks in pretty much every classroom I’ve been in on different floors. I think something can be done to make our learning experience more comfortable to say the least. A lot of students use laptops for class, and if you have a binder to use at the same time, there just isn’t enough space.

    1. I agree with how little space we get with the desks in classrooms. It is like they made the desks as small as possible to fit as many people in as possible. I am curious what kind of solution you come up with.

    2. I completely agree with you because certain classes require you to have a notebook, folder, and textbook out at the same time. And if you drop any of those 3 items it can disturb the class or make a mess of papers you have to pick up due to barely any room.

    3. Yes, I agree with you because when I ever I try to use my laptop in the English class the laptop won’t fit on my desk. Therefore, a comfortable desk is needed in every classroom in NAC

  6. I am writing my memo on automating the bathrooms in the school. From the paper towels to the sinks, soap dispensers toilets and all should be automated. I think on a campus with so many people it is important to be as hygienic and waste as little resources as possible, automating bathrooms is a big step towards that.

  7. My memo will be the need to higher the quality of City College wifi. In certain locations on campus the wifi does not connect as well, and the internet is a key aspect to school life. Blackboard, Cunyfirst, and DegreeWorks are all college wide programs used by all students. There have been times where I wanted to work on my online physics and chem assignments but the wifi just did not connect or was laggy and required me making my laptop forget the network just to re-input all my information.

    1. I agree and this problem has happened to me numerous times. The Wifi in the school is very weird as it says I have 3 bars but cunyfirst and blackboard never seems to load correctly.

    2. Yes I agree that this issue needs to be solved because this issue happened to me very frequently when I am trying to finish an online homework but I cant because it does not load the website fully or it my not even load when at the same time it tells me that the network connection is perfect.

    3. Brandi,I 100% agree with your statement. Just a few day ago I had to log onto the CCNY wifi about 6 times before it finally worked. This change would have a huge impact on the campus.

    4. I think that this is a really good idea, and should be implemented as soon as possible. Since much of our classes rely on an online homework system, it’s only reasonable to ask for a better internet connection.

  8. My memo is about crating a new outdoor cafe around Sheppard hall to accommodate students with condiments and foods that our own CCNY cafe cannot provide. It irks me that I wait 10-15-minutes at food stands in the morning because of the lack of employees being able to serve students their food and at sometimes the food is made in unsanitary conditions. I believe that a uniform, monitorized food center that contains known food chains such as Dunking Donuts, Starbucks, and Chipotle.

    1. This is a really cool idea, it would be nice to have more food seating in a place other than NAC. I’m not sure how well outdoor service would work in the middle of campus, but I like the idea of not having to go to 145 to get Dunkin Donuts.

  9. My memo will reflect on the lack of parking at the CCNY campus. No one enjoys taking the train or bus to school and it gets progressively worse the farther you live from the campus. The addition of a garage will allow more students to drive to school instead of taking public transportation. The parking lot that the campus has now is far too small to even be able to fit all of the faculty so there needs to be more space for parking.

    1. Adam, I agree with you. As a school that is mostly composed of commuters, I feel that CCNY should open a parking garage/lot for students. Driving to school would be incredibly useful for students, as they could bypass the delays and crowds on public transportation.

    2. Yes, I agree with you that there should be parking for students to allow students to park their cars. The MTA subway is very slow and annoying. I travel about 3 hours in total, back and forth, which is very annoying.

  10. My memo is going to be on changing the chairs found within the classrooms of all facilities used for teaching. The reason for this is simply because a lot of the chairs simply don’t have a lot of space for students to work on, whether it’s taking notes or taking a test. I often find myself cluttered on my desk, and it leads me to feeling uncomfortable and not being able to pay as much attention as I normally would. Also, the chairs themselves can be hard to navigate in and out of, as there are multiple people right next to you since they decided to stuff classrooms. There is a such thing as a desk that has the actual desk part or holder that is able to retract, allowing for you to come out of your seat from the front rather than one side, which seems like a step in the right direction as to what we should do.

  11. I decided to write about the issue of the escalators in the NAC building. This issue is important because this issue happens more frequently then it needs to be. Students and staff heavily rely on the escalators and if the escalators are not operating then this causes a major problem in all City College buildings. The escalators are meant to help students and staff move around. Since most of the time not all of the escalators are operating this does make it harder move around between floors.

    1. This topic is legendary. Maybe I just hate physical activity, but I’m always breathless after walking up just one floor on the escalators. The elevators are pretty slow most of the time too.

  12. I decided to write about the accessibility of books from the ccny library. Some books require you to request the book and retrieve it physically. However many students work as well as go to school, and do not have the time to travel to the college just to receive a needed source for an assignment. This also applies for the Shepard’s Hall Music Library and any other places in ccny that require you to to request a book and physically retrieve it. These books should be made fully accessible online.

    1. I agree it is very hard to get access to the books that we need sometimes and sometimes we have request books from other colleges which is time consuming. I think accessibility of books would be a very interesting topic to write about because as students we all have faced those problems.

  13. I will be talking about the school needing a lost and found in order for people to get their lost valuables. This is because one day I lost a folder that I left under my chair in class and I forgot it so the next day I went back and it wasn’t there anymore. I had all the syllabus and many important documents. there was another time where a girl left her ID near a bench I didn’t know what to do so I just left it there since the school has no lost and found.

    1. I agree because Hunter College has a lost and found which multiple people I know have found their stuff from there. They have a secure safe with safety officers so you know your stuff won’t be stolen or misplaced again.

  14. I will be talking about escalators for my memo. Escalators are really important and they should be always functioning because they are a lot faster than using the stairs.

  15. I chose to write a memo about establishing a daycare facility at City College campus because I think that there are many people on campus (students and faculty alike) that can benefit from something like it. Stemming from the dog daycare idea given by Ms. Pringle in class, having a daycare right on campus may make it more convenient for parents of young children to know that their child is easily accessible while they are working or studying. It can also provide a source of volunteering opportunity for those who are interested in working with young children.

    1. I think this is a great idea! A daycare facility would not only benefit parents on campus, but also anyone looking for a job or volunteering opportunity, just like you said. It sounds like an idea that everyone could take advantage of.

  16. My memo is about opening up a tutoring center in CCNY. The reason I did this was because of my experience with tutoring and the lack of organization that comes with it. The rooms for tutoring are chosen based on whatever classes are empty at the time, and these rooms are always subject to change. If you’re not keeping up with announcements, there’s no way to know when and where tutoring will take place. I think opening up a tutoring center would be a much more beneficial and organized approach.

  17. My memo is about putting solar panels on campus to generate renewable energy, this is a sensible approach to renewable energy and will be beneficial to the environment.
